The Governor sent a Holiday message to thank the members of the armed forces and to offer his hopes that the holidays are peaceful and full of happiness.  He reminds us all to look after the people in need and stop to check on people who need a helping hand or a neighbor to look in on them. Now more than ever it is time to give back to others.  The Governor said, regardless of how we celebrate the holidays let this be a time of hope and reflection on the many blessings we have received and the hope for a brighter tomorrow.

First Lady Cecile deJongh will spend part of Christmas with Natasha Richardson whose apartment was destroyed by fire in Bovoni earlier this month.  The Good News, no one was injured but the family lost all of their possessions. Santa Claus and a fire truck will accompany the First Lady. If you wish to join them, they are meeting at 10:00 AM at the Bovoni Community Center to present gifts to the Richardson family.

Department of Education sends holiday greetings to everyone – staff, teachers and students with high hopes that the coming school year will be full of tremendous achievements. Delegate Dr. Donna Christensen extends holiday greetings to one and all for a merry Christmas and a happy Kwanza. She extends special warm regards to our service personnel stationed overseas and thanks them for their service to the nation. Her offices are closed until December 28

Good News from the Virgin Islands National Guard as the Major General Renaldo Rivera announced the 51st Public Affairs Detachment will return today  from their deployment at Guantanamo Bay Cuba.  They have been away since January of this year and today  – Staff Sergeant Shereen Grouby and Specialist Juanita Philip will return to St. Croix at 1:30 and Sergeant Athneil Thomas will come to St. Thomas at 2:30 – the community is invited to come to the airport and welcome home our soldiers.

A military budget bill just passed by Congress has $25 million for the V.I. Army National Guard to build a new Joint Force Headquarters readiness center on St. Croix, according to Delegate Christensen.  The funding passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week and the U.S. Senate by unanimous consent Wednesday morning. Now it is on its way to President Barack Obama's desk for his signature. The $725 billion federal defense authorization act funds most direct U.S. military activities, but not military support such as the departments of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security.

HOVENSA says they will be working through the holiday on inspections and clean up in Clifton Hills and Fredensborg following a hydrocarbon emission on December 9. There are distribution sites for drinking weather in Clifton Hills and at the St. Croix Animal Shelter. Car wash vouchers have been distributed to the 158 people whose cars were affected. And 257 roof tops have been pressure washed.

Special Post Office hours today – Ottley Post Office in Sugar estate,. , Watlington Post Office in Frenchtown, are open from 7:30 AM to noon, parcel pick up to 5 PM. from 7:30 AM to noon, parcel pick up to 5 PM.  DeLugo Post Office downtown and East End Station will be open  from 7:30 AM to noon, parcel pick up to 3:30 PM. Havensight Post Office is open from 9:00 AM to noon

Christmas season means administrative leave for non-essential government workers. Gov. John deJongh Jr. is granting non-essential government employees administrative leave for Christmas, the St. Croix Festival and next year's inaugural celebration. Administrative leave is granted territory-wide from noon to 5 p.m. on Christmas Eve

Crucian Christmas Festival reminds everyone that the Coney Island rides open in festival village on December 25 at 6:00 PM and there is a Christmas concert in Buddhoe Park Frederiksted on Christmas Day as well.  Sunday December 26 is the Miss St. Croix Pageant.

Christmas morning starts with the Challenge of the carols at 5 AM in Emancipation Garden.,  Senator Celestino A. White and the Hopeless Hapless Choraliers remind everyone that rehearsal begins at 4 AM at hotel company fire station on the waterfront and new members will be inducted at 3:45 am, don’t be late or you will be fired. Senator Celestino A. White reminds all musicians to walk with their instruments. He says the economy is band and we can’t afford to buy any.

Good News Maker of the Day are the crew from WAPA’s water division. You usually hear people complain, but a caller called yesterday to tell us that the WAPA water crew made a huge hole near ADT and they arrived first thing Thursday morning to repair the hole and resurface the road. She was expecting a hole in the ground through the holidays instead it lasted a few hours and when they were done the road was back to normal. Big Thank You to the WAPA water crew.
