Confusion over Airline bookings – Dept. of Tourism will Help

Flags at half mast.  It is not a local passing that brings our flags to half staff. President Barack Obama and Governor John DeJongh issued flag orders to honor the lives lost in the weekend shooting in Tucson Arizona that cost a federal judge his life and seriously wounded a sitting Congresswoman along with 8 other lives lost and a long list of injured people.  Flags will be flown at half staff through Friday of this week.

The Bad news – fire destroyed an empty house on Back Street near the St. Thomas Synagogue called the Captain Simmonds house. .  The Good News, no injuries and no serious damage to the surrounding homes.  The neighborhood is tightly packed and the Fire Services did valiant work to get hoses to the location and keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes. The home is called the Engle Leverock Simmonds house for the St. Thomas Harbormaster in the 1930’s.

Recently the territory’s major carrier, American Airlines, announced that customers could no longer book flights on the major online booking agencies Orbitz and Expedia. Delta Airlines announced that its flights could no longer be reserved on CheapOAir, OneTravel and BookIt. Will these moves impact potential visitors as they search for their annual winter vacations? Dept. of Tourism is working to counter the effect.  They have a dedicated special section on their website at to provide an updated list of tour operators and online travel sites that continue to offer air and land packaged vacations to the territory featuring American Airlines and/or Delta Air Lines. The Dept. of Tourism is also speaking with travel agents and interested parties through their Facebook and Twitter accounts.

Good show at Tutu Park Mall on Saturday as more than a dozen Custom bicycles filled center court as a posse of young men in white Sportorama Bicycle Show T-shirts showed off their pride and joy bicycles.  Curtis Gilpin of Sportorama organized the show for young people to display their custom decorated bicycles. Bikes were judged in four categories: Shiniest, Best Paint, Most Original, and Best Overall.

What’s this the Daily News has their annual ballot for the best of this and the best of that.  I turned to the radio stations and lo and behold,. WSTA isn’t even on the list you could vote for, 11 stations, several I’ve never heard of and no WSTA.  Boycott the Daily News. They left the best out...

WSTA News Director Lee Carle continues to recover in the Intensive Care Unit of Schneider Hospital. Carle suffered a blood clot in his left leg which requires additional surgery, the possible loss of his leg and recovery in a prosthetic device.  Carle says his spirits are up, he is grateful for the outpouring of prayers and calls and he is certain he will return to the airwaves of WSTA.  We send our best wishes to Lee.

Crucian Christmas Festival is over.  with all the delights of a festival.  The Calypso monarch competition, Prince and Princess competition, a festival village that was spectacular, Children’s and Adults parades and fireworks to cap it all off. That is a Crucian Christmas Festival for the record books.

The Board of Elections reminds all candidates who ran for public office that the end of year campaign contribution report is due on January 10th

Tuesday PTSA meeting at CAHS is postponed until Wednesday of next week – that is January 19.
