Governor John DeJongh is in Florida today to meet with officials of the cruise lines that ply our waters.  He is joined by Commissioner of Tourism Beverly Nicholson-Doty, and deputy Commissioner Chantal Figueroa, Police Commissioner Novelle Francis, and Department of Public Works Commissioner Darryl Smalls. The Governor says the meetings are all about maintaining St. Thomas and the Virgin Islands as the Premiere destination in the Caribbean region. They are meeting with Executives from Carnival Cruise lines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Line and the Florida Caribbean Cruise Association executives.

Yesterday the Governor met with the rear Admiral of the USCG Seventh District rear Admiral William D Baumgartner.  This was a first visit to the Virgin Islands for the Admiral who was in town to address the Yacht Industry Security Conference about small vessel security strategies. The Governor thanked the admiral for the Coast Guard’s recent help in natural disasters and search and rescue missions. They also talked about protecting critical infrastructure, improving marine fire fighting capabilities  and cruise ship safety.

Public Services Commission met with the ferry boat companies. The consultant says with government subsidies, the ferry companies are making a 10% profit, so the rates are adequate to maintain the businesses.  The electronic ticketing system lasted two months before it failed. Hand held scanners were lost. Manual tickets are in use. No one from Windots came to the meeting so their plans to develop geo-thermal energy are tabled.
