Governor John DeJongh announced that he is opposed to Government workers who stayed off the job in protest against the recent decision to delay pay increases. He decried the sick outs and the union leaders who quietly organize the protests. He said “In even condoning these job actions the leadership of the Steelworkers Union is proving themselves Shockingly oblivious to the financial challenges that our territory faces at this moment in our recovery efforts and the difficult reality faced by millions of Americans who are out of work” Calling it narrow and selfish self-interests, the Governor pointed to dozens of states that have frozen or cut salaries benefits and pensions and many have resorted to layoffs. There are 20,000 government workers on Puerto Rico who would gladly trade places and have a job at a frozen salary. The national unemployment rate is 10%.

Crime does not pay.  We don’t usually tell you about crime on GNH, , but we do when the criminals get to the end of the process and get their punishment. District Court Judge Juan Sanchez sentenced Ashley Andrews to 151 months in prison on federal charges of conspiracy to defraud the government, wire fraud and program fraud.  Back in 2002, Andrews and others created a phony company to sell the government sewer work in a no-bid contract. Other members of the scheme Ohanio Harris got a 1 year prison stretch, , Co-conspirator Campbell Malone for 4 years. In a separate case Andrews and others were convicted of trying to defraud the government in restorations to St. Croix Government House. 12 and a half years in prison. Crime does not pay.

Good News St. John, Delegate Dr. Donna Christensen says it is Good News for vets on St. John that the Myra Keating Smith Health Center has launched a Veterans Administration health center. She worked to get this to come for St. John vets.  Hearty Congratulations to all the folks who worked with Delegate Dr. Donna Christensen to bring a vets clinic to St. John

Good News for Lee Carle.  Our News Director was facing the prospect of losing his leg due to problems with circulation in his leg.  After a five-and-a-half-hour operation Tuesday at New York City’s Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, doctors were able to save his leg. He is however losing his Big toe and other toes that the doctors were unable to restore to life. Carle still faces the next operation, and after that, he will likely recuperate at a rehabilitation center on Long Island, near his daughter.

Bureau of Internal Revenue reminds tax payers of the 90 day gross receipts tax amnesty which will expire January 25.

We told you yesterday that the Joint Board of Elections meeting had been postponed – 6 of the eight members necessary for a quorum showed up and tried to hold a meeting anyway. They had planned to elect officers of the joint board.  No quorum, no meeting, no decisions.

St. Croix – the Waste Management Authority is working at the LBJ Housing complex on the force main.  They will shut down the pump station today for some 10 days while they connect a new 24 inch Force main and replace the flow meter and stand pipe and clean the wet well. They will be pumping sewage over Long Reef for ten days while the work is being done.

TONIGHT Dr. Mark Lehner is an Egyptologist He looks at urban planning in the complex settlement that built the pyramids over 4,000 years ago. Dr. Lehner will share his discoveries on Thursday January 20 at the Prior-Jollek Hall of Antilles School at 7:30 in the evening. Tickets are $20, teachers $10, students $5.
