This evening Governor John DeJongh will  deliver his State of the Territory Address to the people of the Virgin Islands – that is set for 7:00 this evening. We will have it for you live right here on WSTA. You may also watch the address on WTJX.  And it will be heard on the Legislature own channel and on their web site. This is Governor John DeJongh’s fifth State of the Territory address and he is expected to highlight the stark financial position the Government is facing. And explain the steps he expects to take to get us out of our financial mire. The Governor is also expected to speak about education, law enforcement, public safety, economic development and health care. 7:00 PM right here on WSTA.

Oh but there wil be no expensive reception after the address.  The Governor says that tight times call for austerity and he is scaling back. Like the absence of the inaugural reception there will be no State of the Territory address reception. No shrimp.

The President of the 29th Legislature Ronald E. Russell announced Tuesday that the Legislative session slated for Monday, January 24, 2011, in the Legislative Chambers in the Capitol Building, on St. Thomas at 10 a.m. has been postponed until further notice.

Joint Board of Elections had another non-meeting.  With 3 Board members from St. Thomas and two from St. Croix they were short the number of board members to have a quorum on Saturday as the Joint Board of Elections tried to address the issues facing them.  No quorum, no meeting. There were people in the audience visibly upset that this meeting did not begin.  The word Disrespect and disgraceful were repeated.  There were harsh words fot he board members not present and strong words in a letter sent to the absent members. Next meeting is February 3 at 10:00 AM on St. Croix

While most cruise passengers aboard the Caribbean Princess will be touring the island, visiting attractions and taking advantage of St. Thomas’ world-famous shopping, more than 160 passengers arriving on the ship on today at Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal will take to the streets to compete in the 5th annual “Cruise to Run” race. The race, which is part of a special cruise itinerary designed for runners and other athletes, includes races and sporting activities at each port of call. Today’s race begins at the Crown Bay dock at 9:30 a.m., heads West towards UVI to the Zone B Command Fire Station and then turns back East to Inspection Lane before ending in Crown Bay. Organizers worked in conjunction with the St. Thomas Roadrunners Association, the Department of Tourism, the Police Department, St. Thomas Rescue and the Crown Bay Center to plan the race.   

Bureau of Internal Revenue reminds tax payers of the 90 day gross receipts tax amnesty which will expire January 25 tomorrow.

The VI Humanities Council is extending its deadline to January 24 to accept nominations for the annual Heath Award, which honors two certified grade K-12 public school teachers. They are looking for nominations for teachers with outstanding ability and unfailing dedication to teaching the humanities.  Each winner will receive a $1,000 cash award and a commemorative certificate. Coming Up Thursday - Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs announces that the lottery for ALL spaces in Vendors plaza is set for January 27 at 6:00 PM at the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs Conference Room.  This is a reinstatement of the traditional date of the lottery and moves it from the end of December when many people are away or traveling.  Vendors MUST be present at the lottery and only the person whose name appears on the application may attend the lottery.  For more information call 774-3130 ex 4239.
