Who is the best at Army style drill team routines?  The JROTC Drill teams in the USVI dominated the scene at the 7th annual Colonel Pedro Negron Drill Competition in Trujillo Alto Puerto Rico. St. Croix Central High School won first place in Unarmed Platoon Drill and in Armed Drill as well.  Kean school won first place in Squad regulation Drill and in Tap out Drill. And in individual tap out competition, Kean students came in 1st, 2nd, 4th, fifth, 9th and tenth places. Hearty Congratulations to cadets Shelliqua Bartley, Brendon Esprit, Shellece Nelson, Franklin Colas, Josinio Andrew and Kerrell Letang. Ivanna Eudora Kean School took First place overall in the Competition and Central High School was second overall. Governor John DeJongh commended the 72 members of the ROTC drill teams in their display of excellence in the competition in Puerto Rico.

Delegate Dr. Donna Christensen has Good News from Washington DC as she was voted the ranking member on the Democratic side in the US House of Representative Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Oceans, Wildlife and Insular Affairs by the unanimous consent of her colleagues. She takes the job with seniority after losing it in the last congress. Christensen will also serve on the Energy and Mineral Resources Subcommittee. She is also on the Homeland Security Committee, where she served for three terms.
She will be a member of the Subcommittee on Border and Maritime Security, which oversees border issues, port and maritime security, and the U.S. Coast Guard.  Meanwhile the delegate has phone trouble in St. Thomas – while the St. Croix number is working   call 778-5900.

What’s happening in Borunefiield? Residents held an angry meeting with Port Authority officials last night. remember back in November the Port Authority said the residents had until March 31 to move out of the dilapidated buildings that have been home for many residents for decades. The problem is money, the Bournefield homes have been held at artificially low rents and the residents would face a large rent jump upon moving. The Housing Authority  has a wait list of more than 3000 people. More in Bournefield, the Police and Fire stations in the area were also given notice to clear out. Senator Celestino A. White said nothing will happen on March 31 – he says the Port Authority has no authority on that date.

Education Human Resources Director Dayna M. Clendinen of the Department of Education says  new and current school teachers are eligible for federal student loan deferment and cancellations retroactive to the 2004-2005 school year. If you acquired your college loans between 1987,  and 1993 you may qualify for deferment of loan repayment under the Federal Stafford Program.  For more information about teaching deferments for the FFEL Program, consult your promissory note, or the lender, or call the Division of Human Resources. 1-800-848-0979. Loans can be canceled in locations where the federal government says there is a teacher shortage. In the Virgin Islands the Federal Government says we have a teacher shortage in : Art, English as a Second Language, Elementary Education, English, Foreign Languages, Math, Music, Physical Education, Reading, Science, Social Studies, Special Education, Therapists and School Nurses.

St. John has the blues today as the Eurodam anchors in Cruz Bay with a crew of Blues performers and more than 2,000 Blues fans aboard “The Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise.” This is the world’s only fully chartered Blues cruise. The Department of Tourism has a full lineup of local entertainment, cultural activities and educational programs across St. John for both residents and visitors to enjoy. Cruise passengers will be welcomed with steel pan music, mocko jumbies, Carnival dancers and greeters with island information and Cruzan Rum.  Vendors will offer locally made products in the Franklin Powell Park.  Cool Session Brass will perform with two Carnival troupes, Quadrille and Salsa dancers and a limbo show.
