Mountain Top is Back. You remember a fire two years ago that destroyed the whole Mountain Complex – now from the ashes arises a new Mountaintop – The new Mountain top is 17,000 with a 45 foot ceiling and an 85 foot bar and a sweeping deck that showcases the vista. The new Mountain Top is open air, like a mall not individual shops and the view is still the most spectacular in the world, and yes they are making banana daiquiri’s again as well.  The official grand opening will come in March but its open now for everyone.

HOVENSA says the emergency is over and they are closing the water distribution system and returning to normal. The Environmental Protection Agency and Department of Health tested cisterns and gave the all clear. There are no hydrocarbons from the refinery in the cistern water.  

Governor John DeJongh had the Make a Wish Foundation over to Government House to highlight the good
work of this incredible organization.  The Make a Wish Foundation got started in March 2010 at the behest of Rabbi Arthur Starr and his wife whose daughter works for the national Make a Wish Foundation org. Some of the special wishes granted – T’Shawn Baxter got to meet Shaquille O’Neal, Nina Lewis got to meet Justin Beiber and J’Len Ford got to be Police Officer for a day all of the children are facing difficult medical issues and the Make a Wish Foundation reached out to make moments of happiness amid their difficulties.  You can help – contact Make a Wish Foundation.

Governor John DeJongh also had a visit from the head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command,  Admiral James Winnefield, who is based in Colorado. The Governor briefed the Admiral on the territory’s security concerns and challenges. The Governor called us a “forward deployed asset. The Admiral took time to highlight the good work of our National Guard and said “we want to be good partners.”

Police Department has a new idea called Taxi Watch.  They want to use the eyes and ears of the taxi drivers  help stop crime. Taxi drivers are all over the islanded.  They see lots of things. Now the Police Department wants them to watch for crime. The idea is to have taxi drivers turn the whole island into a huge neighborhood watch. Good Idea. Good News

Dept. of Tourism is promoting our islands in the winter weary Northeast this week. We get more than 100,000 visitors from NY and NJ, so they are naturals for a little more work. On Saturday the Tourism crew has a showcase at the  basketball game between the NY Knicks and the New Jersey Nets. Our message will be in front of 18,500 fans with a Virgin Islands themed half time show and promotions.

Tourism is in Boston at the Boston Globe Travel Show - a major regional event for destinations, packagers, and travel agencies, More than 22,000 consumers and 1,600 travel trade professionals come to the show and our Tourism staff are there.

Police Department is warning St. Croix Business to be on the lookout for a person trying to cash stolen checks, they came from Ann Abramson – Do not cash checks without seeing proper identification and matching the person’s ID with the check names.

Division of Personnel on St. Croix is closed today – the staff have a retirement luncheon. From 1 to 3:00 PM.

The  University ‘s Caribbean Exploratory and Research Center has a Town Hall meeting today about the public health impacts of climate change. The public is invited to learn about climate change like extreme weather, flooding, shoreline loss due to sea level rise and related public health issues like fish poisoning, and dengue fever.  Dr. Gloria Callwood and Dr LaVerne Ragster are working on  “A Collaborative Response to Public Health Challenges linked to Climate Change Impacts in the Virgin Islands and the Caribbean.” The town hall meeting is Friday at 6:30 pm at the UVI Administration and Conference Center and the Theatre of the Melvin Evans Center St. Croix. The St. John Community Integration Team is hosting a Bicycle Rodeo on Saturday on .
9:00 AM to noon at Coral Bay Ball Field,  1 o’clock to 4 o’clock at the Cruz Bay National Park ball field. Bike owners can learn the basics of bicycle safety, maintenance and mechanics. Bureau of Motor Vehicle staff will register your bicycle and give you a bicycle license. Children receive a free helmet! While supplies last.

Sunday the Hebrew Congregation will host their annual antiques auction from noon to 2:30 at the Mark C. Marin Center at Antilles School with a preview at 10:00 AM and lots of spectacular antiques – vintage radio, grandfather rocker, a bidet and a commode.  And there are newly discovered Pissaro etchings and getaways available. Sunday from noon to 2:30 with a preview at 10:00 AM.

Tonight and this weekend – the 6th annual Water Island music festival.  Concerts are tonight, Saturday night and Sunday night all start at 7:00 PM  - there is ferry from Crown Bay Marina at 6:00 PM and again at 6:30 – there is a ferry back to St. Thomas after the concert.  7 Musicians – three nights of music. Jazz, Pop, Classical and all kinds of music. Bring a chair. A ticket is required for indoor seating.
