The fire at Bovoni landfill was out of control Sunday evening and through the night. Firefighters battled the blaze all through the night and we just got a call from Johnny Riviera who lives in the valley beside Bovoni. He reports that there is no smoke, the fire is out and Johnny rivera had the highest praise and compliments for the VI Fire Service for their attention to saving his home. Darryl Smalls of Department of Public Works says the firefighters had the equipment and resources they needed  to stop the fire. The fire is out. The Bovoni landfill is closed today.

St. Croix Police Department has a new command center – on wheels.  The St. Croix Police Department will be able to send the rolling Winnebago to action sites, like their saturated patrol sites and to special events.  The 40 foot Winnebago came to the Police Department from the Department of Education. Commissioner of Police Novelle Francis says the idea isn’t to fill the van with criminals, but with basketballs and baseballs and fruit juice to bring the Police Department to the communities as a benevolent partner. Francis says it as all about the Police Department working with the communities.

Dept. of Tourism announced a new charter flight from Denmark.  The flights won’t come until October of this year but when they do, we can expect 200 passengers from Copenhagen from October 2011 through April 2012.  The flights will come once a week all winter long. Right now some 10,000 Danes visit the territory every year and the new charter flights will increase that by 25%. Dept. of Tourism is responding with a quarter million dollar advertising and promotion budget in Copenhagen and Billund – the two cities from which the most Danes come to the Virgin Islands. Big Thank You to Bravo Tours which is promoting the charter flights.

St. Croix has a new leak in th Figtree force main. This time along Hess road.  Corrective measures are being taken to stop the leak as the area is being excavated. No impact on traffic- the work means Figtree pump is stopped and sewage is being discharged east of HOVENSA.

Governor John DeJongh is in Washington DC for the National Governors Association meeting.  On the agenda is the economy, health care, education and job creation.  They met over the weekend through today. From Washington DC, the Governor called on the Governing Board of WAPA to rescind recent pay increases for management.  He says under the current economic conditions, it is unwise for the WAPA Governing Board to permit pay increases until the current fiscal problem is resolved.

Tax time and the Bureau of Internal Revenue announces taxpayer assistance Every Saturday from this Saturday through April 9th – The service is free and the tax staff will help you complete the 1040EZ or the 1040A First come, first served. – the office on St. Thomas is at the Bureau of Internal Revenue next to Pueblo Long Bay and on St. Croix their offices are in Estate Diamond.  Coming Up Saturday and every Saturday through March 9.

We have a burn ban in effect on St. Thomas and now St. Croix VI Fire Service is also issuing a burn ban.  From today forward all burning permits are revoked.  Residents are reminded that dry conditions are dangerous, wildfires are a possibility, people living in areas that are prone to wildfires are urged to  cut back overgrown vegetation to a distance of 40 feet away from structures.

There is a parent empowerment conference on St. Croix today at UVI that is all about “Parents and Teachers Working Together for Academic Success”. The conference is hosted by UVI’s Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and the Inter-Island Parent Coalition for Change.  The conference sessions –feature a Universal Design for Learning, assistive technology, Individual Education Plans and advocacy. On St. Croix, today from 9 a.m. to 3:30 pm at the Great Hall.
