Juan Luis Hospital has a problem.  2.3 million dollars on hand to pay 22 million dollars worth of bills. The Board of Directors says they have a financial Emergency. The board gave CEO Jeff Nelson the right to put out contracts without bidding to expeditiously solve immediate problems. He can spend up to 250,000 for immediate turnaround spending. Nelson says the hospital needs to improve efficiency, accessibility and quality of care. He says they have to invest to grow. Nelson wants Juan Luis Hospital to be the most trusted hospital in the region by 2020.

Millions in federal economic stimulus money still flow into the V.I., paying for myriad good things from teacher salaries to fiber optics. But the spigot closes in 2012As of the end of January, the U.S. Virgin Islands has been awarded $364.9 million and spent $173.6 million in ARRA funding -- about 44 percent, Roughly 453 jobs have been created -- at least for the duration of the funding -- and a much larger number have been retained through state fiscal stabilization funds. some ARRA funded projects are complete, some are ongoing, and some -- like a massive, $60 million broadband project --  are just beginning to ramp up. But the hard news is that the stabilization funds cannot be redirected to offset the government’s fiscal shortfall.  Nope.

Dept. of Labor is taking applications for the summer youth employment program with a special outreach to St. John – Today and Friday at the administrators office.  Application are available on-line at vidol.gov. Priority goes to students in the 11th and 12th grades who have no prior work experience.


Hearty Congratulations to the students from St. Croix Education Complex who won the Science Bowl on Sunday.  The competition was stiff among the seven teams from 6 schools but Complex was overwhelming.  They were undefeated and won with 520 points versus 146 for the other teams in the first five rounds Then they faced undefeated Country Day School and beat them 104 to 50 for a decisive victory that put St. Croix Country Day School in second place.  Complex won the right to represent the Virgin Islands in the nationals in Washington in late April and May facing 62 teams from around the nation. Congratulations to the team members – Claudine Lacdao, Biko McMillan, Gerhart Steven, Jusila Marcel, Steven Browne El-i-shu-won Mitchell and Coach Joann Lewis.

On and while we are talking about Complex’s success in science - Applications for the  St. Croix Educational Complex Mathematics and Science Magnet Program are now available at the registrar’s office.  If you have an 8th grade students from public, private and parochial schools on St. Croix you are invited to apply to participate. Completed packages are due Friday, March 11.  Maybe your 8th grader can be on that Science Bowl team.

News from our own News Director Lee Carle who is back in New York City Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where he underwent additional angioplasty to open blood flow in his leg.  He is scheduled to undergo surgery to remove his toes today and then back to rehab to get walking again.

This is Virgin Islands History Month in the Virgin Islands.  Governor John DeJongh signed a proclamation urging everyone to honor and celebrate the territory and its history. People of all origins, backgrounds, ethnicities, colors, beliefs and religions have made contributions to the history of this community – disproportionate to its size and geography. March is the month to celebrate Virgin Islands History.

This month is also Social Work Month and the Governor urges all residents to get to know the social workers and their role in our community. Social Workers guide individuals and help them get the services they need from our government and community.  The National Association of Social Workers will conduct presentation on St. Croix Education Complex on March 14 and at Central High School on the 15th.  March 24 and 25 on St. Thomas the Social workers will host full day workshops on Veterans issues benefits and services.  March 29 and 30 on Both island the National Association will host breakfast recognition ceremonies.

Virgin Islands Foster and Adoptive Parents Association is meeting at 5:30 PM at the Dept. of Human Services Lobby – all foster parents are urged to attend.

Small Business Development Center has a training program on wastewater system design. Today through Friday on St. Thomas at the Nisky Center Small Business Development Center.

Department of Public Works will close a portion of Queen Mary Highway in Estate Herman Hill from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM from now through Friday. Motorists are urged to avoid the section of the road from Orange Grove Road to the west end of the Christiansted bypass.

Evelyn Marcelli Elementary School will hold a memorial celebration in honor of the 100th birthday of the former principal today at 1 o’clock at the school.  There will have poetry readings, dancing, singing and a special reflection on the life of Ms. Evelyn Marcelli. The community is welcomed to join us!”
