Governor John DeJongh is delivering the keynote address to the annual meeting for the Virgin Islands Hotel and Tourism Association at the Ritz Carlton this morning.  Meanwhile the Department of Tourism announced today the launch of its revamped marketing web site, USVIMarketing.com.  To better align it with the branding of the Territory’s consumer site, VisitUSVI.com, the marketing web site underwent a complete overhaul, including enhancements to its design aesthetic, featured content and creative elements. This site is for the Department’s sales team, tourism partners and local community.  You can downloadable electronic brochures, e-newsletters, get press releases and visitor testimonials to help market the destination to travel agents. Other features include direct links to Facebook and Twitter pages, allowing all visitors to USVImarketing.com to stay up-to-date on the happenings in the Territory publicized via social media vehicles.



Hugh Masekela and Lira Hugh are reaching out to the community. You know their concerts are Friday at St. Croix Island Center and Saturday at the Reichhold Center. Hugh Masekela and Lira are delivering programs to school students and at the university. Today  Lira Hugh will deliver a motivational empowerment lecture demonstration for female students by the Education Complex at 9:30 a.m.



UVI is gearing up to open the new education center on St. John. This will be the first time the University has a center on St. John and a chance for St. John residents to attend UVI Classes without traveling to St. Thomas. The Center is set to start offering classes in the Spring semester. There will be an opening reception on Monday at the third floor location above Starfish Market. The classrooms are equipped with video-teleconferencing technology and state-of-the-art computers in an interactive classroom that links to St. Thomas and St. Croix classrooms.



Education Commissioner, Dr. La Verne Terry, announces the opening of the 2011 testing season with scheduled Virgin Islands Territorial Assessment of Learning testing from March, 21-25, 2011. Dr. Terry said, “All states and territories are mandated to use criterion referenced standardized assessments in order to measure Adequate Yearly Progress. Here the VITAL is the achievement tests that are used to determine whether our schools make AYP. We cannot say enough how important these tests are to the overall process of school improvement. We need all students to continue reporting to school each day and on time, be sure to be on time and participate in the testing, as well as to be well rested and nutritionally prepared on each testing day.



Schneider Hospital is looking for volunteers with interests skills and time to help in patient care, and services to enhance the patient experience. The Virgin Islands Police Department will conduct a helicopter training from 9:00 AM  today , on the grounds of the UVI St. Croix campus. The training will not impact the flow of traffic or interfere with the university’s daily activities..



St. John the trash bin in Carolina area is being moved. Starting on Monday the Carolina bin will move to the Sea Breeze site in Coral Bay. Do not drop trash at the old bin site.



WAPA says they have a water interruption today on St. Croix in the area around Beeston Hill and Hermon Hill including the Questa Verde Condos today until 3:30 PM.

Here comes a new episode of the COPS Virgin Islands TV show this weekend.  It is a reallife drama about a night in the life of a Virgin Islands Police officer – show is on Government access channels on cable and on ABC Channel 8 tonight at 5:30 PM and Saturday and Sunday at 6:30 PM.



The Department of Human Services’ offices for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) - formerly Food Stamp - and Temporary Assistance for Needy Family (TANF) program in Frederiksted have been relocated to the Frederiksted Government House complex on Prince Street until further notice.  Major air conditioning repairs in the Human Services offices are still in progress. The public is asked to report urgent matters and questions to 772-0068 in Frederiksted and 773-2323 in Golden Rock.

Who can help Work-Able, Inc?  Our  community-based non-profit, workforce development agency  is in serious financial difficulty at this time!  They specialize in providing employment, training and transition services to our youth and adults with disabilities, as well as others with support needs in the workforce.  Work-Able Inc. needs to raise $100,000 by the end of April to pay off mounting debt, and be able to continue to provide these much needed services in our community.  Who can contribute? The Joseph Sibilly Elementary School’s PTA  will host a Spaghetti Dinner Social and Art Show and Expose on This evening, from 5:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the school. “A complete dinner featuring various types of spaghetti, turkey, ground beef, marinara sauce or soy meat, complete with desserts and beverages will be on sale $7 for adults, $5 for students,” There is art work by students, games for the family, live entertainment, prizes and an art auction by Sibilly students.



Nicole Swan wins the Love City Car Ferries, Inc. Name that Mascot Contest.  The name of the Mascot will be ARTIE, chosen as a short version of Artery.  In Ms. Swan's words: "The word artery means a blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to any part of the body.  It also means a main channel or highway especially of a connected system with many branches. Ms Swan will get a prize in April aboard the new Ferry.  



Eight schools competed in the Territorial MATHCOUNTS Competition yesterday – The math competition pits students from 8 schools in a battle of brains.  Who won – Mary Buendia from Bertha C. Boschulte School was first place, then Osaze Newton of St. Croix Country Day School second,  Jarrad Haverman from Antilles School was third and Julysah Willock of Elena Christian Jr. High School with Raheem Knight form Elena Christian Jr. High School is the alternate. The coach is Michelle Garcia. The best team in the competition was from Antilles School and the Antilles coach will coach the territorial team in the National MATHCOUNTS in Washington in May.
