Today is April Fool’s Day – if someone tells you your shoe laces are untied, look them in the eye and say “I wear loafers.”

Sandy Point St. Croix is closing.  As of today, the turtles get to use Sandy point to lay their nests and raise their young turtles.  For the next five months Sandy Point refuge is closed to people, dogs, horses and vehicles. The Fish and Wildlife staff are expecting from one thousand to eleven hundred turtle nests this season. and as many as 60,000 sea turtles babies to be born in the next few months. The beaches are closed to protect the turtle hatchlings.

University of the Virgin Islands  is reaching out to its alumni.  Dionne Jackson is the new Vice-President of Institutional Advancement and she has a plan to raise funds from Alumni. She has expanded the search to more than just the alumni who earned four year degrees to include those who attended UVI and graduated from a different institution and those who earned two year degrees.  That means more than 13,000 alumni ! Jackson says in the March phone-a-thon they used professional company to call everyone and ask for support. They have plans for a major gifts campaign for the Reichhold Center and a planned giving program to encourage alumni to remember the University in their last will and testament. They also want government employees to make donation through payroll deductions like United Way. The fund raising goal is to raise 1.5 million dollars.
Have you driven down Airport road on St. Thomas recently?  On the right hand side there is a new array of solar panels that stretches from the flagpoles all the way to the hill opposite the Port Authority Administration Building.  What is it?  A 450 kilowatt solar electric installation that is one of the largest in the Caribbean and will generate 660,000 kilowatts of clean reliable electricity.  Big Thank You to Governor John DeJongh and the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act for bringing green sustainable energy. Good news for the islands electrical systems.

Here is a contest for High School students – Department of Planning and Natural Resources wants High School students to create a promotional campaign w /a radio ad, newspaper ad and TV ad promoting the marine environment and awareness and stewardship of our marine environment. Kean school Principal Sharon McCollum will unveil the donation of a Ford F150 Pick-up Truck to the school by adopter/community partner Alpine Securities, LLC. Chief of External Affairs for Alpine Securities, Jason Charles, will join Kean High administration for the official donation. She says “at Kean High, are extremely grateful to Mr. Charles and Alpine Securities for their generosity, their civic mindedness and, particularly, their constant support,” The school needs transportation to move band and other equipment, or facilitate maintenance needs. The donation of the vehicle eliminates those ills and further assists with the operations of the school. Big Thank You to Alpine USVI, They have an unveiling ceremony today at 10:00 AM the school.
