On this Monday April 18    we welcome Carnival Victory  to Havensight  Dock and Caribbean Princess to Austin Monsanto Marine Terminal and  SeaDream 1 to St. John.

It’s Carnival and we have the first of this year’s Carnival royalty. Sunday night at Lionel Roberts Stadium, the Prince and Princess competition played to a full house with 5 pairs of contestants in the competition.  Shahina Persad and Shakil Persad were second runners up and had the Best Talent and Mr. Persad was Mr Intellect.  Daniell Joseph and Tyreke Morton were first runner’s up and they had the best eveningwear and were most photogenic.  The winners –J’Nee Powell and Tyrell Richardson won the titles of Prince and Princess. More important, the crowd was on its feet dancing to the first sounds of this year’s Carnival.

University of the Virgin Islands  held its 47th annual Academic Awards ceremony on Sunday at the St. Thomas Campus. Dozens of students won awards, were cited for excellence, top grade point averages and scholarships.  The name that came up the most was Derron Ambrose who had the top grade point average in the senior class, and won two psychology awards. And our own Sondria Pemberton, the Good News Gal won the Communication Award. Hearty Congratulations to all the students in the University taking home honors and scholarships.

Take a ride through Hospital Ground.  Spotless.  The crews from Department of Public Works and the Police Department worked together to remove debris and get ready for the Carnival celebration. Vegetation was trimmed, trash was removed and it all looks a lot better. Commissioner Darryl Smalls of Department of Public Works says they are doing a job on Frank Powel Bandstand. In Cruz Bay St. John. The park will be more attractive  with new landscaping, new benches and new underground electrical system for the lighting. The DPWx crew are also working on the surface of the Enighted Pond Parking Lot.

Attention CAHS - Parents and guardians of students attending the Charlotte Amalie High School are advised of Report Card distributions and an Open House on Monday, April 18th for ninth (9th) grade students and Tuesday, April 19th for the 10th through 12th grades. The schedule of special parent meetings for ninth (9th) graders is as follows: Team S - 10:00  to 11.  Team K is from 12:15 to 1:15 and Team A is from 1:45 to 2:45. Parents of students in the other grades (10, 11, and 12) will receive their report cards during Open House on Tuesday from 1:00 pm to 3:10 pm

Senate Committee on Education, Youth and Culture is meeting on St. Croix with Public Hearings on the state of education.

UVI Theatre has their main stage production of “Old Story Time,” by Trevor D. Rhone, at the Reichhold Center. The show will be on stage through April 19th  Tickets for “Old Story Time” are available from the Reichhold Center call 693-1559.

WAPA reminds College freshmen and sophomores that the application deadline for the Alva McFarlane Engineering Scholarship is Monday April 18. Complete packages are  due by 4 PM on Monday.

The Charlotte Amalie High School Varsity Baseball Team is competing in the Hall of Fame National Baseball Classic in Orlando, Florida.  The national tournament attracts top ranked high school baseball teams from across the United States and the territories and the Caribbean.   This year’s team features three senior players, clean up hitter Frank Thomas Jr., pitching ace Lucas Pascal and Troy Richards.  And some outstanding sophomores; shortstop J’moi Smith and center fielder N’Kai Dowe.”    The team returns to the territory on April 25th.
