The Governor says he is getting ready to cut 500 jobs from the government payroll.  Yesterday senators responded with a letter saying they will come back with a budget update that will close the 17 million dollar gap and prevent any layoffs.  Senate President Ronald Russell says they are ready to act in sessions in June - looking at adjusting property taxes to create a discount as an incentive for paying early and possibly revisiting the administration's proposal to eliminate one or two paid holidays, among other actions.

The Lieutenant Governor Gregory Francis published the list of people who owe the government property taxes in today Avis newspaper.  The list is available on line at www.ltg.gov.vi  - - You have 30 days to get your taxes paid. There are hundreds, no thousands of names on the list. Some owing as little And 500 dollars others owe 74,000 or 69,000 and some as much as 295,000 dollars.  

District Superintendent of Schools Jeanette Smith-Barry, told parents last night that Evelyn Marcelli Elementary School will be closed within a few months. She points to the mandate to cut costs and the school is old, in poor condition and has many structural problems. the district cannot afford to maintain the smaller class sizes offered at Marcelli, especially when there are two other smaller schools in the area. Students will be absorbed by Leonard Dober, Ulla F. Muller or Jane E. Tuitt elementary schools, while the teachers will also be redistributed.

Gasoline prices falling. Yes.  HOVENSA said it is dropping the rack rate for gasoline at the refinery regular is down 33 cents, Premium is down 25 cents.

Senate Committee On Economic Development Technology And Agriculture approved new tax breaks for hotel developers on St Croix to spurt them into building their complexes. The bill would commit a portion of future room tax revenues to guarantee the repayment of construction loans for new resorts, The idea is to help Paul Golden's project at Great Pond, William and Punch and Robin Bay. The Hotel and Tourism Association is not in favor - they say it puts a burden on the existing hotels. The committee also considered a bill to allow creation of a single share holder corporation to make it easier for individuals to own business and treat them like corporation.

Senate Committee on Government Operations is meeting to take up hazardous duty retirement for WAPA Employees after 20 years of service;  a bill on the rates of contribution of Government Employees Retirement System members - they will consider ways to eliminate the LEAC, and a bill to provide incentives to make payment of property taxes. They also have a bill to have direct deposit of tax refunds. The senators will consider a plan to acquire property in Frederiksted for public use and a plan to have revalue real property on St John.

This week is African Liberation Week and Wednesday is African Liberation Day.

Governor John de Jongh, Jr., Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, will present, "Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands and America's Territories - Unique Challenges, Shared Successes" during Robert A. Underwood's eleventh Presidential Lecture Series  Thursday May 26 at 5:30 p.m. in the CLASS Lecture Hall, University of Guam campus.

Bureau of Motor Vehicles will be closed today on St. Thomas from 11:30 AM in the inspection lane and noon for the main desk. Normal hours will resume on Thursday.

The Best Beginnings Early Childhood Conference comes to St. Thomas Thursday and Friday at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. This is Hurricane Preparedness week. Time to take stock of your preparations for storm season. Test the generator, make sure your food stocks of canned goods are up to the needs and time to revisit the storm preparation list.  Emergency supply kit.  Plans for where you will go in the event your home is not storm ready. Also time to revisit your insurance policy and see if it needs to be changed or updated.

 The Housing Authority, is set to re-dedicate of the Lucinda Millin Home for the Aged, during this Senior Citizen's Month, - that is today from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 pm Senator Celestino White, Ace Hardware and PEO Productions will present the Lucinda Millin Home of a 60” plasma flat screen TV for the lobby for everyone to enjoy. Senator White says the idea is to turn the lobby at Lucinda Millin Home into a theater. 
