Today is Memorial Day - a day set aside to honor our veterans.  This is a federal holiday. Banks, courts, schools and all government offices are closed. ICC is closed so is WAPA and the Waste Management Authority.

On St Croix there is a parade starting at 9:30 AM from Frederiksted US Post Office to Frederiksted cemetery. Tribute will be paid to James Dowling - a Korean War veterans. The a parade will continue to the Anne Abramson Pier for a seaside ceremony. The speaker is Retired Chief Warren Officer Richard Schrader Sr.  On St. Thomas there is a parade starting at 9:30 AM from the cemetery to Veterans Park for the ceremony. The Guest Speaker is Major Sandra Hodge Benjamin of the Virgin Islands National Guard.

Governor John DeJongh issued a proclamation making today a special day to remember all of our fallen heores

Delegate Dr. Donna Christiansen was a featured speaker at a forum on the mutual history and culture of Denmark and the US Virgin Islands. They are talking about plans for the 100th anniversary of the Transfer of the Danish West Indies to the US Virgin IslandsThe delegate is also going to the Aarhus Caribbean festival  today though the end of the week with a variety of local small businesses showcasing locally made products

IQRA a private Muslim school on St Croix graduated its second senior in their 14 year history Yahya yusuf studied at the school for the last 13 years and graduated on Sunday He is headed to the University of Connecticut next school year where he will study accounting.

Some 200 people charged into the water at Maho Beach Sunday morning for the eighth annual Beach-to-Beach Power Swim.. Overall winner of the 3.5-mile swim was Bryson Mays, who set a course record at 1:10:32, topping the previous record of 1.11.10 set in 2006.

Police Commissioner Novelle Francis announced the increase in fees for services provided by the Police Department as of June first.  The cost of police and traffic records, reports, fingerprints, firearms, permits and security licenses are all going up.

Hurricane season begins on June 1st and VITEMA has an all hazards expo on both St. Thomas and St Croix on June 2 and 3.  This year the theme is "Empowering the Community" The all hazards expo is on St Croix at Sunny Isle Shopping Center. And on St. Thomas at Tutu Park Mall both days from 4:00 PM to 9:00 PM. You are reminded that this week is National Hurricane Preparedness week. More information at VITEMA.gov

This week is also the beginning of the closed season for Queen Conch.  From June 1 to November 1 it is illegal to take Queen Conch. Department of Planning and Natural Resources  asks everyone's cooperation.

June 18 is the festival bike race at 8:00 AM  at the National Park Ball Field
On June 19, the Prince and Princess Pageant at 6:00 PM at Winston Wells Ball Park
June 24 is the festival musical mix with Tarrus Riley and others at 9:00 PM at Winston Wells Ball Park
June 25 is the festival Queen Selection Show at 8:00 PM at Winston Wells Ball Park.
June 26 is the food fair an royalty  coronation at 1:00 PM at Frank Powell Band Stand
June 29 is the opening of festival village at 3:00 PM at the Cruz Bay Parking Lot
July 3 is the Culture Day at Frank Powell Band Stand
July 4 starts with J'Ouvert at 4 am then the festival parade at 11AM and concludes with fireworks over Cruz Bay at 9:00 PM.

The Support group for people diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis is meeting on Tuesday 31st that's tomorrow at 4:30 PM at the Schneider Hospital Community Health room

Virgin Islands Fire Service announces that as of today the ban on burning permits on St Croix has been lifted. - you may contact the arson and prevention unit at 773-8050.


The World Forum Debate of UVI’s 17th Annual Summer Institute for Future Global Leaders from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the Administrative and Conference center Building. . The forum will take place in the first-floor conference room of the Administration and Conference Center on UVI’s St. Thomas campus. Dr. Carlyle Corbin will serve as the forum’s moderator. The forum topic is: Managing the World’s Diminishing Resources is the Responsibility of Developed Nations. Twenty eight junior, senior and graduate college students representing 13 countries (from the Virgin Islands, the U.S. mainland and throughout the Caribbean) are participating in the Summer Institute. Individual students are assigned to defend the debate topic from the point of view of various “spheres” and specific countries within the spheres, including: Africa, Latin America, the Americas, Asia, the European Union and the Caribbean

Virgin Islands Small Business Development Center has selected Ms. Debra Thompson as its 2011 State Star. She has been with the SBDC for 9 years on the administrative staff. She has been instrumental in assisting the State Director to improve internal procedures which ensure that the VI SBDC functions cohesively, abiding by the rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the organization. As the 2011 State Star, she will travel with the Virgin Islands delegation at the 2011 Association of Small Business Development Center annual conference in San Diego, in September ,and  receive an award at the 2011 State Star reception at that conference.
