Kean school gym is making progress

Good News from Darryl Smalls, Commissioner of Public Works. The Ivanna Eudora Kean High School track project is showing a lot of progress. The gym renovations are also on schedule. Smalls says the Gym will be ready for the Kean school graduation that is coming up June 11. Drainage from the roof has been fixed. Air Conditioning has been moved and restored. New energy efficient lighting is in place. The schools track is also showing signs of progress. The base of soil is in place. Next up is the track surfacing and the irrigation for the grassy field. It Should be complete within a year.

Police Commissioner Novelle Francis announced the increase in fees for services provided by the Police Department as of June first- that's tomorrow.  The cost of police reports, traffic records, fingerprinting, firearms permits and other permits like security licenses are all going up. Oh and the Police Department reminds everyone - you can't use the Police Department name or logo in ads without their permission. Someone used their name at a lingerie fashion show to imply the Police Department was providing security. You can't use their name without their permission.

Hurricane season begins on June 1st and VITEMA has an All Hazards Expo on St. Thomas on Thursday June 2 and on St Croix on Friday June 3rd..  This year the theme is "Empowering the Community." The All Hazards Expo on St Croix is at Sunny Isle Shopping Center on Thursday . And on St. Thomas it will be at Tutu Park Mall on Friday - Both expos are from 4:00 PM in the afternoon to 9 o'clock in the evening. Since it is the beginning of Hurricane season, Boaters are reminded that Division of Fish and Wildlife's has a lottery drawing for the 16 free storm mooring spots in Benner Bay this Saturday morning at Fish and Wildlife in Red hook. These moorings are part of a larger project to install 112 moorings in the East End. If you have a yacht that qualifies, you can get more information at the Department of Fish and Wildlife. call 775-6762

This week is also the beginning of the closed season for Queen Conch.  From June 1 to November 1 it is illegal to take Queen Conch. Department of Planning and Natural Resources  asks everyone's cooperation.



St John festival is getting going on Saturday - this year it is An Astronomical And Cultural Splendor In Heaven For Festival 2011.  
Upcoming June 17 is the senior variety show at Winston Wells Ball Park at 7:00 PM.
June 18 is the festival bike race at 8:00 AM  at the National Park Ball Field
June 19, the Prince and Princess Pageant at 6:00 PM at Winston Wells Ball Park
June 24 is the festival musical mix with Tarrus Riley and others at 9:00 PM at Winston Wells Ball Park
June 25 is the festival Queen Selection Show at 8:00 PM at Winston Wells Ball Park.
June 26 is the food fair an royalty  coronation at 1:00 PM at Frank Powell Band Stand
June 29 is the opening of festival village at 3:00 PM at the Cruz Bay Parking Lot
July 3 is the Culture Day at Frank Powell Band Stand
July 4 starts with J'Ouvert at 4 am then the festival parade at 11AM and concludes with fireworks over Cruz Bay at 9:00 PM.

Time for beautiful and talented women to compete for the title of Miss Universe US Virgin Islands . The pageant  is coming up Sunday June 5 at Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort at 4:00 PM.  This year's contestants are Esonica Veira of St. Thomas, Ab-i-ola Hodge of St John, Kah-li-da Lloyd of St. Thomas, Kara Williams of St. Thomas and Alexandrya Evans of St Croix.  They will compete in personal interview, dance, speech, swimsuit, promotional presentation, eveningwear, and impromptu question and response.  Tickets are available call debra at 513-4817.

The Support group for people diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis is meeting on this evening  at 4:30 PM at the Schneider Hospital Community Health room

Virgin Islands Fire Service announces that as of today the ban on burning permits on St Croix has been lifted. - you may contact the arson and prevention unit at 773-8050.

All territorial public school teachers and paraprofessionals in the Department of Education are advised - the Department will pay 100% of tuition and fees for a  three credit course at the UVI in the Fall semester - undergraduate or graduate level - for certification or recertification. Interested persons can sign-up from Monday, June 6th through Thursday June 16th, 2011 between the hours of 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School, has the school’s annual Virgin Islands Heritage Quiz Bowl at 9:00 am in the school auditorium.  The event will honor of former teachers Violet Connor and Rae Armstrong. Students in grades one to three are scheduled to participate.

Our good news maker of the day Justine Are-valo of St. Mary's Catholic School on St. Croix who will represent the Virgin Islands in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. 14 year old Justine, her mother, and her coach, Cecilia Payne are preparing for the Scripps National Spelling Bee that is set to take place on Wednesday in Washington DC. That's Justine Are-valo making Good News.

Here's more good news! St. Croix native Jareem Dowling has been named as assistant coach of Morehead State University-- a Division 1 school. This is quite a milestone for the 29 year old and for the Virgin Islands sports community.
