At the top of the news on Thursday June 2

Voters on St Croix came out in force to see the demonstration of the voting machines the Board of Elections is considering for our new machines. The manufacturers rep from MicroVote General Corp. said he usually only sees a handful of people come to these demos - usually the Board members - and he was surprised at the huge out pouring, likening this to a Town Hall meeting - more than 100 people grilled him for hours about the machine called the infinity. Does it leave a paper trail?  Yes it can, but the legislation has to be changes to enable the paper trail option. A demonstration of the Infinity voting machine is set for St. Thomas today - today at 6:00 PM at Aryans Bar and Restaurant.

Meanwhile the Board of Elections on St Croix sent out 3,766 letters to voters to tell them their registration is in doubt and their registration will be cancelled if they do not respond by June 30th. They also have plans for a Registration day on Emancipation day in Frederiksted.

Senate Committee on Health and Hospital met yesterday on St. Thomas to take up the electronic medical records act and that was approved unanimously. They debated a bill to raise the administrative fines for physicians who charge up-front fees instead of waiting for the insurance payment.  This is illegal, but few cases have ever been recorded.  The debate centered on whether to raise the fine from the present five thousand dollars to  seven thousand minimum and a thirteen thousand maximum. Health dept says the fine is enough, there are no cases of violations.  Senators said they had heard from constituents who complained about up-front fees - others suggested this was possible confusion over co-payments and deductibles. They approved the change.

They debated an appropriation of 3 million dollars to construct an institution for the mentally ill. Department of Health staff said the funds are insufficient and funds for long term operations and maintenance must be found.  Another option was to expand the Eldra Schulterbrandt facility on St. Thomas

We don't normally report crime in Good News headlines - but sometimes--- Kishawn Flemming entered a bar on Gamel gade and harassed customers - the owner told him to put on his shirt but Kishawn pulled a knife, swung at the owner and hit himself.  Go to Schneider Hospital for stitches to face and hand.  Crime does not pay.
