Governor John DeJongh appointed Rodney Querrard, as Assistant Police Commissioner. At the same time, de Jongh named Querrard as Acting Police Commissioner effective immediately. Querrard retired as Police Chief in April 2012 having served in that capacity since June 2007. Prior to his tenure as Chief of Police, Querrard served for almost nine years as a member of the High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force where he earned the rank of Police Lieutenant. The Governor said he was extremely pleased at Rodney’s decision to return to government service and help transform the leadership of the Police Department to meet our daily challenges in law enforcement.”  Querrard said Job One is to assess the state of the Police Department and resume a level of cooperation with the community that keeps information flowing to the Police Department.

The Environmental Protection Agency does an annual check of all the toxins released into our environment. Up is the trend; up from 760 thousand pounds in 2010 up to 1.8 million pounds in 2011.  98% of this is from HOVENSA. BUT -  this may not be a doubling of the toxins…. the EPA is monitoring two chemicals they never bothered with in the past. They are using new more sensitive instruments to measure the releases.  It may all be moot. HOVENSA stopped refining petroleum.  Expect next year’s numbers should show a dramatic drop in the emissions of toxins.

GERS says the St. Thomas office telephone system is undergoing repair. Not definite date when the system and voicemail will be restored. They are working closely with the phone company fix it as soon as possible.

Are we missing out on a great tourism opportunity? Andrew Zimmern, thanks so. He is the well-known host of the eating show called Bizarre Foods on the Learning Channel.  He thinks St. Croix has a great food culture that tourists may be missing. The Source online has the whole story. Zimmern vacations on St. John but he doesn't think St. John is hotbed of indigenous culture. He thinks St. Croix makes better food, has better culture and hence makes better television. He thinks we are missing out on a great tourism opportunity by NOT showcasing our local cuisine. He says “I do not want to come to the islands for a half-baked version of French or Italian food.” He goes on to say “There are no pates on the menu at my hotel. Pates should be on every hotel menu. Local food is a selling point ! I can have a club sandwich at home. But a great grilled fish sandwich on fry bread with a little tamarind sauce, that’s a fantastic sandwich." He thinks saltfish and sweet potato is fabulous. If you put this on a plate in a fancy Caribbean restaurant in Miami, we'd be writing about it for years." Zimmern thinks we undersell our local cuisine.
