Governor John DeJongh announced an agreement between the government and the Government Employees Retirement System to use property tax collections for 2005 and before to meet the employer contributions to the GERS. Recent retirees will receive their rightful pension benefits.  He said "We have been in discussions with the trustees on this issue for some time and we want to take away any anxiety that our employees have as to their retirement payments and yet meet the need of the retirement system for amounts they claim to be due.  The agreement says that the balance left in the Special Real Property Tax Receipts Fund after the government has repaid a loan from November of 2011 will complete the government’s outstanding contributions to pensions for government employees who retired between October 1, 2010 and December 31, 2013.  The GERS had determined these employees needed payment of missing employer contributions in order to receive their annuity.

The Virgin Islands Next Generation Network connected its first Community Anchor Institution and Public Computer Center from its Frederiksted Fiber Access Point. The Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library, and the library’s internet service provider should complete its connection to the viNGN network later this week.  There will be a “ribbon cutting ceremony when the remaining Community Anchor Institutions in Frederiksted have been connected.”  Community Anchor Institutions include all schools, universities, medical and health care facilities, public safety entities, community support organizations and other government facilities.  In total, viNGN plans to connect 316 Community Anchor Institutions throughout the territory.

It may be Back to School – but some students in Coral Bay St John are surprised to find they are going to go to First grade in CruzBay.  The class of first graders in Coral Bay is too small for a full time teacher, so Guy Benjamin school will not have a first grade this year – instead the students will bus to Cruz Bay to go to Julius Sprauve School St John. Same story for the Kindergarten. 9 students in Coral Bay for Kindergarten. While Sprauve has 31 – too many for one class, so some of the Spruave student may go to Benjamin school in Coral Bay or some Kindergarten kids from Coral Bay may go to Spraueve in Cruz Bay. Busses will be provided.
