On St. Croix the Adventure  of the Seas is coming to Frederiksted

At the top of the news on December 2 Monday

How much rain did we get?  Not a record’s worth, but still a lot.  We are under an unusual configuration with northeasterly cold wind is meeting southeast moisture and it is colliding right over our islands.  This is no big weather system, no high wind.  Just rain.  On Sunday on St. Thomas there was 1.8 inches of rain, three quarters of an inch on St. John, yet only a trace on St. Croix.  Saturday have a lot more rain, St. Thomas, got 3 inches while St. John got an inch and St Croix got less than half an inch. This is no record.  2003 hold the honor.  In 2003, St. Thomas got more than 18 inches of rain in November.  Remember the mudslides?  There is still more rain coming.  The National Weather Service says we will continue to have rain through midweek Wednesday or Thursday.  After that expect just typical trade winds showers. So far this year 38.84 inches of rain.

Governor John DeJongh offered best wishes to all residents of the Virgin Islands who are celebrating Hanukkah or the Festival of Lights.  He says "For the first time since 1888, the first day of Hanukkah fell on Thanksgiving Day, bringing together the national holiday with a very special spiritual one for those of the Jewish faith.  Hanukkah lasts from sundown on November 27 until sundown on December 5 this year, St. Thomas is home to the oldest continuous-use synagogue in the United States, known as the Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas.  The congregation was founded in 1796 and the synagogue was built in 1833.  Hanukkah and Thanksgiving will not coincide for another 77,798 years, according to some calculations.  The American holiday, is 150 years old in comparison to Hanukkah, which originated more than two thousand years ago.

The Bureau of corrections on St. Croix is trying a new idea this holiday season.  They are pairing police officers with children one day shopping experience.  The idea is to get children to meet law enforcement officers in a positive setting.  Go shopping together.  It's not about law enforcement.  It's about police officers bonding with kids and kids discovering the police officers are kind people.  December 15 is the target date and Kmart West on St. Croix is the location.  The goal is to have 100 children, each with the Kmart gift card buy Christmas presents.  Senator Judy Buckley is behind this idea and she's inviting anyone who would like to contribute Kmart gift cards or money to contact Buckley's office at 712-2379.

The annual report on the cost of the 12 days of Christmas is out.  Every year, PNC wealth management tallies up how much buying one set of gifts in each verse of the song would cost.  Buying just one of each will cost you about $27,000 this year, which is almost 8% more than last year.  If you buy all 364 items repeated throughout the Carol, it will cost you $114,000.  And if you buy it all at the last minute on the Internet.  It's going to cost you $173,000.  Hiring drummers will cost more so will pipers piping.  Four calling birds are up by 80 bucks. The pear tree is down a smidge. You'll save five dollars on the pear tree.  Sad news - the eight maids a milking are the same price as last year, the minimum wage has not changed.

The Virgin Islands has a new emergency food and shelter grant of $157,000.  If your nonprofit has a voluntary board, an accounting system, you practice nondiscrimination and have a capacity deliver food or shelter programs, then contact United Way Nisky Center or Lutheran Social Services in Frederiksted.  The deadline to apply has been extended to December 4.  For more information call 774-3185

Good News Maker of the Day  is Loren Abramson, the ADA Coordinator and St. John Annex Administrator at the Legislature of the Virgin Islands who completed the ASL program at the University of the Virgin Islands’ Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. She wanted to make the IV Legislature more responsive to all our constituents. The class was a 10 week program teaching the basics of sign language including the alphabet, numbers, finger spelling, basic phrases and conversational sentences.  Loren Abramson signing to the hard of hearing – that is good news.

Our virtue of the week  is Understanding – It means using your mind to think clearly, paying attention to see the meaning of things.  An understanding mind gives you insights and wonderful ideas.  An understanding heart gives you empathy and compassion for others.  Understanding is the power to think and learn and also to care. You are practicing understanding when you…
*   Concentrate and pay close attention
*   Reflect on the meaning of things
*   See the whole picture
*   Resist distractions
*   Put yourself in other people’s shoes
*   Forgive others and yourself when you make mistakes
Say this  Affirmation:  I have an understanding mind.  I see truth about things.  I have an understanding heart.  I have empathy for other people’s feelings.
