A strong area of high pressure located over the central Atlantic will continue to dominate the weather pattern at least into next week. Isolated showers are forecast with a general increase in the potential for showers on Saturday night. That area of high pressure will maintain fresh trade winds through Saturday. Seas to six feet and winds will average to 20 knots. Winds and seas will increase tonight and through the weekend.

The passing of President Nelson Mandela of South Africa is being highlighted with a tribute today from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the Earle B. Ottley Legislative Chambers at the Capitol Building on St. Thomas.  Senators, community activists, faith leaders, university representatives, students, and artists are expected to give remarks or perform at the remembrance.

Also in rememberance of Nelson Mandela - on Saturday in Mandela Circle on St. Thomas there is a community gathering on Saturday, December 14, at 7 in the evening. Participants are invited to bring songs, musical instruments, dance, poetry and stories about the “Lion of Africa,” Nelson Mandela. We invite everyone to add their personal salute as people around the world share theirs in a global outpouring of love, respect and thanks for the great Nelson Mandela.  For more information call Maekia Phillips at 514-5665.

The GERS and Virgin Islands government are working to reconcile and post payroll deductions for loan payments and contributions. Normally the Department of Finance takes payroll deductions for the GERS and loan payments  But right now the checks and electronic statements do not match. GERS Administrator Austin Nibbs said the electronic file was not matching exactly. The problem was triggered in August When OMB changed some of the codes that designate departments and agencies. They are working on a fix.

Joint Boards of Elections has a three-day educational workshop on St Croix at the Renaissance Carambola Resort. They had a formal, public session yesterday. Today they are meeting again and they will convene again Sunday morning at the Carambola for breakfast. During the course of these days, they are working to hammer out numerous issues for the 2014 election; policies and procedures, governance issues, board member's responsibilities, parliamentary procedures, and it is all about the new DS200 tabulating equipment which will be used for the first time in the 2014 election.

First Lady Cecile de Jongh presented cash prizes to the winners of the Second Annual Mental Health Essay Contest yesterday at Sts Peter and Paul School. 144 students submitted an essay on the topic of "How can persons with mental illness be better supported in our community. The top three students from are Kesha Hyacinth, Rodney Querrard, Jr., and Shereene Battiste.  All three attend Sts. Peter and Paul School. 97 students in this District submitted essays for the contest.  There are more
presentations today on St Croix at Central High School at 10:00am today.  The first place winners will each receive $350, the second place winners get $175, and the honorable mentions get $75. Students writing about mental health - that is Good News.

The Government Employees’ Retirement System offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix will be closed on Friday, December 13 to allow employees to participate in the Annual Employee Recognition Ceremony.
Regular business hours will resume on Monday, December 16, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Charities will be out, Catholic charities has a canned food drive, bring canned food to Jewels on Main Street. Vinnie Mohannani says he  will double the can count. They are asking for Vienna sausages, corned beef, canned tuna and canned salmon. Come to Jewels on Main street after 5:30 PM. First block on Main Street just down from US Post Office between Cardows and AH Riise on the left. Bring a can of food and Vinnie will double the donation. Jewels on Main Street will be sponsoring a Christmas shopping bag Decorating activity from 6:00 to 7:00pm. Kids will have the opportunity to design a Christmas Shopping bag with supplies provided for by Jewels on Main Street. They have free gift wrapping to customers making purchases in our store

This year, the lighted boat parade has 19 boats – they will parade along the waterfront Friday evening around 7 PM. 4 passes of the boats along the waterfront. Look for the Good News Guy.

The Geminid meteor shower is the most intense meteor shower of the year. It lasts for several days tonight through Monday night – it  is rich in fireballs and can be seen from almost any point on Earth. They are expecting between 100-120 meteors per hour. The waxing gibbous moon will interfere with how many you can see, but between moonset 4 am and sunrise you will see a lot of meteors.
