Cruise Ship News Carnival Valor at Havensight Dock

Headlines : vice president Joe Biden is visiting, Cruzan Christmas Carnival is in full throttle.  The governor talks about the cover over, and Taylor Canfield is the sailor of the year.

At the top of the news on  !!AIR – December 30 Monday
A special Virgin Islands welcome to Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Doctor Jill Biden as they visit us through Wednesday.  In past years, they visited Water Island, last year they were on St Croix and they returned to St Croix this year again.  They have no public events scheduled and no planned meetings.

Governor John DeJongh updated the people on the proposed sale of the HOVENSA refinery on St. Croix. The principals of HOVIC and PDVSA VI, who are the owners of the refinery, have retained bankers from Lazard Ltd., the global financial advisory and asset management firm to handle the sale.
They say the HOVENSA refinery is an attractive opportunity for both domestic and international operations. Lazard plans to market the facility through their offices in New York, Houston, and Paris, France, in order to capture a wide group of potential buyers."  The governor asked the senators to provide a list of any parties they have contacted who've expressed an interest so he can make the names available to Lazard.

The Governor also commented on the passage of the Omnibus Territories Act by the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, saying "I am very pleased that the requirement for a Chief Financial Officer f was not in the Omnibus Act.  It served no useful purpose and I will continue to oppose such a provision.  The bill that goes to the full US Senate included a provision for the Comptroller General of the United States to monitor the local government's finances.  The Governor said he can't imagine the Comptroller General spending any time looking at the forecast models used by the commonwealths and territories, or even states for that matter. But he does not oppose that provision.

You know that the rum cover-over expires at the end of the year.  Presently we get $13.25 per rum gallon. That will revert to the lower rate of $10.50 per gallon on December 31st.  The Governor says his administration's is working to get the cover-over back to the $13.25 rate.  But this requires that the U.S. Congress to approve an extension.  While the governor expects that to pass, in the meantime, the Department of interior has calculated its fiscal year advance at the low rate, which creates a hole in our budget.

On St Croix Cruzan Christmas Carnival is in full throttle.  Coming up Tuesday December 31 it’s youth night in Carnival Village, then J’ouvert starts at 6:00 AM from Hannah’s Rest Corner, into Frederiksted, with bands and crowds in the streets that’s on Wednesday January 1st, and at noon on Wednesday the Food Fair begins at the McBean Clock Tower. This year’s food fair is called "Gloria Joseph Food Arts and Crafts Fair."  Wednesday is Latin night at 8:00 PM in the village while at Island Center they have the Calypso Monarch Finals also 8:00 PM. The children's parade is on Friday January 3 at 10am. The adult parade Sat January 4 at 10:00 AM on Sunday January 5 there is the Talent competition at the Palms at Pelican Cove and Carnival Fireworks late on January 5th

Good news for Taylor Canfield.  The Virgin Islands sailing Association has awarded him the first award of a title as the ‘Virgin Islands Sailor of the Year’ for 2013.    VISA president, Phillip Shannon “Taylor's unprecedented World Championship in match racing was the perfect time to initiate this award. Taylor is the first to be awarded ‘Virgin Islands Sailor of the Year’.  Canfield said he was honored and accepted the award on the behalf of the entire US One Sailing Team, consisting of Rod Dawson, Hayden Goodrick, Mike Rehe, Dan Morris, and Brian Janney.”

Canfield was runner up finish at the Korea Match Cup in June. Two months later, Canfield and the USOne team won three matches in a row at the Chicago Match Cup. Next, Canfield beating Great Britain’s Ian Williams at the Argo Gold Cup in Bermuda in October putting him at the top of the World Cup leaderboard. Then at the Monsoon Cup in Malaysia. Two other top players took defeate and Canfield, was World Champion. This meant the 24-year-old Virgin Islands sailor ended 2013 as the youngest to win three AWMART events (Bermuda 2012, Malaysia 2012 and Chicago 2013) and the youngest to win the World Match Racing Championship. Canfield started skippering Optimist dinghies at age six off the beach at the St. Thomas Yacht Club.  Canfield’s ultimate sailing goals are to sail in the Americas Cup in the near future.
