Earlier today VITEMA performed a test of the emergency tsunami warning system. Here is what it sounded like.  Calles to WSTA said they could not understand what the spoken words were saying.  They could hear the siren, but not the message.. Maybe VITEMA can work on the garbled words.

Central high school remains closed, and the Commissioner of education says this is not chaos. We remain unwavering in our support of the students at Central high school her safety and health are the the top priorities. She hopes they can reopen the school come Tuesday and not have to go into split sessions with St. Croix education complex. The expect a definitive answer by Friday about the problems. If the school cannot be used, then contingency plans were going to affect.

Meanwhile The St. Croix Economic Development Initiative is offering an idea to help Central High School. Following the emergency closure of Central, Anthony Weeks and SEDI are making available their Virtual Education Channel & Interactive Platform on the Internet.  They are offering the Dept. of Education the use of mixed-media, real-time and interactive online technology.  SEDI can provide four separate channels to groups of students in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade  - - accommodating hundreds of students and teachers remotely. While Central remains closed, good news from the, Alexander Henderson Elementary on St. Croix where the kitchen officially reopened yesterday, and students lined up for a fresh lunch of chicken, pasta and fresh veggies. The kitchen was closed late in January due to problems with rodents. After that was solved and everything got a thorough cleaning, the office of special nutrition gave the all clear for reopening. Commissioner Donna Frett-Gregory said, "While we understand closing the kitchen may have been an inconvenience, it was extremely important for us to deal with these problems comprehensively and make sure the kitchen was fully equipped to serve our students."

Today is MATHCOUNTS team competition at Good Hope Country Day School Pavilion.   Some 20 finalists from six territorial schools will be vying for one of the top four positions in the MATHCOUNTS competition.  The teams from Good Hope Country Day and Antilles School are in team competition. Mathletes from Church of God Holiness Academy, Elena Christian Junior High, John H. Woodson Junior High, and Bertha C. Boschulte Middle School will participate in individual rounds. The top mathletes and the winning team will represent the Virgin Islands in the National MathCOUNTS Championship in Orlando, Florida in May.

Lieutenant Governor Gregory R. Francis, says the  Division of Banking and Insurance can now accept insurance industry related filings and fees electronically.  The Division recently implemented SERFF, or the System for Electronic Rate and Form Filing, which enables licensed insurance companies, rating organizations, and entities to submit filings electronically.  SERFF users will also be able to pay their filing fees online.  Insurers and other filers are encouraged to take formal training so they can fully utilize SERFF.  For more information call 773-6459.

Coming up Friday the Edelman Observatory will hold an open house from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, March 28. Visitors will view the planet Jupiter Mars, the Orion nebula and the new supernova among other celestial sites. There'll also be a video presentation and a lecture describing the marketable announcement this past week of the detection of polarization of the cosmic microwave background radiation and what it means for our universe. Housing Finance Authority is planning a major sports facility for Mars Hill St. Croix. In their vision there is a 5,000 seat multipurpose indoor complex suitable for concerts, sporting events with lots of parking on 44 acres near the Claude O. Markoe School. This evening the agency will host a town hall meeting to hear your comments and suggestions - that's this evening at 5:30 at 100 Lagoon complex in Frederiksted. What else will be alongside the sports complex? Restaurants, archery, zip lines, family activities? It’s up to you.

Coming up Thursday the University the Virgin Islands division of student affairs presents a women's history month forum on women in abusive relationships. It's all about making the change. The Forum is on Thursday, March 27 from 5:30 to 7:30 at the administration conference building on the St. Thomas campus.  Panelists include Vivian St Juste, from the Family Resource Center, Doctor Lori Thompson - psychologist, Walter Brown - advocate against domestic violence and Sergeant Celeste Potter of the police department. Women's history Forum will discuss how women can make a change out of abusive relationships. That's on Thursday at 5:30 at the St. Thomas administration conference in her building.
