At the top of the news on !!AIR – April 1, Tuesday

Yesterday was transfer day. But hardly anyone seemed to be in the present tense. All the speakers in the celebration in Frederiksted were talking about the upcoming 100th anniversary. Even the official theme of this year’s commemoration – “Embracing our Cultural Traditions as a Bridge to the 2017 Centennial” – suggested that the one hundredth anniversary is looming.. Many speakers said the Virgin Islands deserve a change of status after 100 years. Many speakers at the celebrations said we should have a vote in Congress, a vote for the president and equal footing with the states in terms of federal programs. As we approach the 100th anniversary of the transfer, many people are looking back and thinking that it was 100 years without full rights of citizenship. The governor said it would be appropriate to get the 100th anniversary of the transfer with the Constitution in place. Delegate Dr. Donna Christensen said she wanted full equality for our citizens. Several people expressed concern that the US government has not stepped up to the plate to make plans for the transfer. There were no representatives of the US Government at yesterday’s ceremony, while the Danish Consul to New York was part of the platform presenters.

Meanwhile in Christiansted, Olassie Davis of the Cooperative Extension Service was part of a separate celebration –  a lecture hosted by InterXchange and the National Park Service at the Steeple Building in Christiansted. He shared what he called little known facts – like that the US did not plan to want to purchase St Croix. But Denmark made it an all or nothing deal. He related his grandmother’s recollection of 1917, there was not special celebration. It occurred without most people knowing or caring about the sovereignty .

On Saint Thomas, a group of visiting Danes observed transfer day by taking a walking tour of downtown Charlotte Amalie. They visited the historic homes, including the Britannia house on like Beardshill. The group includes historians and novelists and they are all headed to St. Croix next week.
