Board of Elections met yesterday and certified the results of the November 2 election. Nothing is different from Election night returns.  Governor John DeJongh and Lieutenant Governor Gregory Francis were re-elected. By a margin of 4,000 votes in spite of a letter from Mapp and Sekou asking for an investigation into stolen votes. Delegate Dr. Donna Christensen was certified for her reelection, Same with Senator-at-Large Craig Barshinger.  In the Senate, there were no changes in positions as a result of counting absentee and provisional ballots.

Port Authority Board voted unanimously to ask all residents of Bournefield to move out of their homes by March 31st of 2011.  The recent flooding damaged five of the homes and the Port Authority Board says that flooding has been a persistent problem, sewage backflow is a health hazard.  The Port Authority says the land is a flood zone. The Port Authority acknowledges the difficulty in finding housing in the Virgin Islands and offered all of the families six months of rent to help with finding new homes. Meanwhile the Port Authority is conducting a survey of its constituents to capture the views, impressions and suggestions of all parties that use the Port Authority's facilities.   The public is asked to participate in this survey by visiting VIPA's Web site at, and clicking on the stakeholder survey which will be available online from November 15th through November 26th.

Governor John DeJongh is in Washington DC today meeting with congressional leaders about the economic health of the territory, health care reform and the rum tax issue.  Delegate Dr. Donna Christensen says the rum tax problem may be abating. Last week Puerto Rico's legislature voted to increase the percentage of the rum cover-over money the territory can use to directly support the island's rum industry, from 10 to 25 percent – with the option of increasing that to 46 percent. That change may indicate that Puerto Rico is ready to drop its protest over the Diageo deal.

Senate Committee on Planning and Environmental Protection met yesterday and approved all of the zoning changes that were before them. Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort gets to add a section to their dock, Green Cay Marina on St. Croix can remove underground storage tanks and build  new ones above ground. Bryan’s Marine in St. Croix can build and concrete boat ramp in Gallows Bay. and on St. Thomas Island Tri-Corp can continue to use their floating dock in Subbase and floating dry docks.

Were you held up on the Airport road by construction?  New solar lights are going up along airport road and in the Parking Lot.  And at the same time WAPA and GE are installing energy efficient LED solar lighting from Brewers Bay Road to Black Point Hill. There will be one lane of traffic around the construction area.

The V.I. Police Department is launching its annual drive to crack down on people who have a little too much holiday spirit and take to the road impaired by alcohol or drugs. The campaign, entitled "Over the Limit, Under Arrest," was announced yesterday on St. Croix by Police Commissioner Novelle Francis Jr. Between Dec. 16  and Jan. 2, police will be on the road in force, holding traffic checkpoints, and waging an aggressive, high-profile campaign to encourage people who have been drinking or using any kind of drug to avoid getting behind the wheel. People who drive while under the influence of alcohol or drugs aren't just taking their own lives in their hands, they are also endangering the lives of every other person on the road.

Just a reminder  Taxi Cab commission reminds taxi operators that operate as dollar ride that they are not allowed to impede traffic as the load and unload passengers.  Such taxi operators must pull off the road , use a turn out or ride on the sidewalk to keep the traffic lanes free flowing while taking on passengers or discharging them. – And they are reminded that Vitran busses have priority in the use of bus stops.

Paradise Jam is coming and the action is ready to start. This is the 11th annual Paradise Jam with hot teams like Xavier and Old Dominion on the ticket. The first game is on Friday at 2:00 PM between St. Peters and Old Dominion.  Old Dominion had a plus 9.6 scoring margin last year ranking them 3rd nationally. They held opponents to 57 points per game – that made Old Dominion 6th nationally. St. Peters is back with six seniors who are seasoned veterans so this may be one of the most exciting games. Second game is Friday at 4:30 PM with Clemson and Long Beach State both teams are well ranked and tough competitors. Third game is 7pm with Alabama vs Seton Hall and 9:30 PM it is Iowa vs Xavier which made it into the sweet 16 last year.
