Legislature met yesterday on St. Thomas they approved an omnibus bill with lots of items. They approved a 3 million dollar appropriation to repair and restore the legislature’s building, 8.2 million for road repairs and they amended the smoking ban to modify the definition of an enclosed area – the original law said any structure with a floor and a roof, the new law says an enclosed area must have walls. And the new smoking ban decriminalizes smoking making violations of the bill a civil offense. They approved 1.5 million for solid waste and road repairs on St. John. They removed funds for infrastructure on Water Island and redirected it road work on St. Thomas. Also in the bill money for GERS to cover sick leave and money to the fifth constitutional convention to initiate a public education campaign. The legislature also approved funds to match federal grants to support new Internet Broadband technology in the Virgin Islands. The Public Finance Authority has created a wholly owned subsidiary called Virgin Islands Next Generation Network to implement and operate a new broadband computer network for the whole territory.

They approved Gordon Finch and Cassan Pancham to the Port Authority Governing Board.  They ratified the Coastal Zone Management permits – St. Croix Financial Center can replace their fuel tanks, Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort can build a 6o foot extension to their dock and Bryan’s Marine can build a boat ramp in Gallows Bay St. Croix. and Tri-Corps can continue the use of their floating docks in Subbase.

They approving the sale of 1,522 square feet of government property on Strand Street, St. Croix and a lease agreements between the government Otto's Glassworks and Cool Breeze Sightseeing Tours. They honored the congregation and ministry of the St. Thomas Reformed Church for 350 years of service to the territory, along with the Rev. Algernon Diego Blyden for his contributions to the territory;

Just in time for Thanksgiving Day – the Virgin Islands Lottery has a new lottery ticket – this time with fruit, veggies herbs and honey on the lottery tickets. Some of the holiday foods are grown right here in the Virgin Islands.


Old Dominion University dominated the Paradise Jam and took home the trophy and bragging rights about beating Xavier in the championship game. It was ODUs second appearance at Paradise Jam. It was a tie game with only 6 minutes left but ODU rallied and kept scoring while the defense kept Xavier’s top player from making field goals. In the end Old Dominion University won Paradise Jam.

Good News from the Governor’s Jobs for America Graduates program at CAHS>  They were running a food drive for Thanksgiving Day and they did the job raising canned good and non-perishable foods for Catholic Charities. Andrea Shillingford of Catholic Charities said the students set an example for other students groups in the territory.
