WSTA Lucky 13 Radio

When journalist Tracy Bymoen visited the U.S. Virgin Islands on assignment for CNN iReport in February 2013, she was inspired by the rich history she encountered and the territory's July 3 observance of the emancipation of slaves, which occurred decades before Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in the United States.  Over the July 4 weekend, Bymoen's CNN iReport article and photo slideshow entitled "July 3, Emancipation Day on US Virgin Islands, Honors Black History" was posted on CNN’s website. Residents are now breathing a sigh of relief as Tropical Storm Chantal has made its way past the territory. Though all ports were closed and VITEMA was on high alert, Chantal remained south of St. Croix and had very little impact on the island. Mango Melee 2013 was a huge success. The annual tropical fruit festival brought hundreds of visitors and vendors to celebrate the flavor and versatility of the mango at the St. George Botanical Garden this past Sunday.  There were demonstrations and workshops conducted by UVI’s Co-operative Extension Services. The family and friends of missing teenagers Terrika Alexander and Rasjahida Escobar, both 16, can now breathe a sigh of relief. The teenagers were located on St.. Croix and were taken into police custody after a concerned citizen reported seeing them in the area of Estate Glen.
