The St. Croix Careforce
program brought out more than 1,200 people on Monday at Sunshine Mall. Big Thank You to HOVENSA, National Guard, the
Glaucoma Foundation and the Virgin Islands Health Department for organizing the
Careforce event. If you missed it, Careforce continues today at D.C. Canegata
Multi-Purpose Center until 6:00 PM this evening. – Careforce comes to St.
Thomas on Thursday at the UVI Sports and Fitness Center. and Friday at Lutheran
Church of the Reformation in Tutu. On St.
John Careforce is on Thursday at St. Ursula’s Church in Cruz Bay. Most people
are interested in the H1N1 flu vaccination.
Priority goes to pregnant women, people who live with children under the
age of 6 months and health care professionals and emergency workers. Children age
6 months to 4 years and elder children who have chronic medical conditions.
Should the St. John ferry
rates be controlled by the Legislature or the Public Services Commission? At a
public hearing last night on St. John the topic was under debate. Senator Craig Barshinger is working to reduce
the ferry dates and increase the government subsidy to support the ferry
companies. His bill proposes fares of $2 from Red Hook to Cruz Bay $2 for
commuters, $1 for children under 12, senior citizens and bulk ticket buyers. Reps
for the ferry companies called the rates a formula for bankruptcy. They want the rates approved earlier by the Public
Services Commission - at $7 per trip. But the larger question is about who
controls the rates. The Legislature or the Public Services Commission? Senate Committee of the Whole is
meeting on St. Thomas to take up the proposed agreement between the government
and the makers of Cruzan Rum, Bean Global Spirits and Wine Inc.
Could the United Nations take up the status of U.S. Virgin
Island's. A panel discussion on St. Croix said Monday raised the topic of status.
United Nations Association of the Virgin Islands hosted the event and discuss The
U.N. Special Committee on Decolonization which lists our Virgin Islands as a
non-self-governing territory. The UN's "Declaration on the Granting of
Independence to Colonial Countries and Peoples," says all remaining
non-self-governing territories and trust territories were entitled to
self-determination and independence.
You know the Dept. of
Tourism Cent-Sation program is attracting a lot of interest. Now American Airlines has put our islands on
sale. American Airlines, announced a sale on fares for travel to the Virgin
Islands. Fares from the mainland start
at $91. NY to St. Thomas costs $118 and NY to St. Croix is $177. San Francisco to STT is $195 and Dallas to
St. Thomas Costs $206. Those are the one-way
fares based on a round trip that will double the cost. Travel must be Mondays to Thursdays for purchases
before 3 November for travel by 17 December 2009. We are on sale.
Who is going to get the lionfish? The lion killers. A group
of volunteer divers on St. Croix are making regular dives hunting for the
lionfish and capturing them. Lionfish are a Pacific Ocean fish that loves to
eat coral and coral fish. They could devastate
our coral reefs and they have no natural predator – except us. Some 45 volunteer divers have been hunting
for the lionfish and doing battle underwater. On the hunt for lion fish...
This is red Ribbon Week and today is Reach Out and be Healthy Drug Free Day. Today at UVI for Red Ribbon Week it is Decoration
Day – various student groups have decorated areas of the campus and there are
prizes and a trophy for the best Red Ribbon Week decorations. Tomorrow there is
a walk and speak out against drug use. Starts at 4:30 PM at the airport entrance and they are walking
to the UVI Golf Course. First 100
participants get a T-shirt, towel and water bottle. Thursday is movie night at
the Dining Pavilion and Friday is Wear red Day.
GERS is celebrating their 50th anniversary and
the Havensight Mall is open for GERS members offering special discounts. Today at Havensight Mall there are discounts
on all purchases for government employees who show their Government ID. Come

Department of Public Works Darryl Smalls will come to Ivanna
Eudora Kean School on Wednesday to talk about plans repair the Gym. He will also update the school on plans for

Good News Maker of the Day Kyza Callwood – winner of the
title of Mr. Cool at UVI – the competition was held on Saturday evening and
Callwood came home with the titles for Best Introductory Speech, Best Beach Wear,
Best Talent and Best Mr. Kool Wear. He is the son of Ms. Ingrid Percival and Mr.
Ashley Callwood. He is also the student representative to the Board of Trustees
and working on a college degree in Management.
