Schneider Hospital has a purchase in process to bring 12 new
dialysis machines to the Hemodialysis unit.
They approved $125,000 to buy the machines. And Juan Luis Hospital announced
plans to reduce energy consumption. They
plans to hire consultants who installed new generators at the hospital so they
will make their own electricity.
Economic Development Authority has 65% of its borrowers in
default. 9.6 million dollars in loans to 466 businesses. 65% in default. That’s the bad news. The Good News is they plan an amnesty now
through February 28 – the loans can be paid without accrued interest or
penalties. Py off 50% of the loan and get half the interest and fees waived.
Coastal Zone Management Commission approved plans by the Waste
Management Authority to drill wells in the Bovoni landfill to relive the
methane gas, collect it and burn it. There is a plan in the works for the Virgin
Islands Energy Office to use the Methane to power the Mangrove Waterwater
treatment plant instead of just burning the gas. This is one more step toward
permanently closing the landfill at Bovoni..
And the Coastal Zone Management Commission also approved continued
extensions for the Dolphin Cove development where some 100 high priced vacation
homes are planned. The site is where the
Navy once performed Dolphin research.
The Committee also approved construction of a sunshade for the Swimming
pool in Estate Nazareth.
Good News from the British Virgin Island’s their new
incinerator at the Pockwood Pond dump should solve the acrid smoke
problem. Governor John DeJongh says he
has assurances from the British Virgin Island’s government that the new incinerator
is on site and should be operational by the second quarter of this coming year.
The new one has a capacity of 100 tons per day and has scrubbers to remove all
smoke from the stack. There is also a plan to immediately remove oil and tires
from the material going into the incinerator.
The Port Authority and
Police Department are busy working for the arrival of the Oasis of the Seas on
December 8th. All roads between Crown Bay Dock and Charlotte Amalie have gotten attention,
curbs repaired, sidewalks fixed. Suddenly wheel
chair ramps have begin to appear at intersections and there are signs to indicate the way Crown
Bay roads will be reorganized. You are reminded they will test the road
rearrangement on Saturday and Monday
with all traffic will be one way from Crown Bay Marine Terminal on route
304 past Crown Bay Marina, Pueblo and
the Bureau of Motor Vehicles

World leaders prepare are coming to the 2009 Climate
Conference in Copenhagen next week. Now
the Endangered Species Coalition has listed the "10 Hottest Species" endangered
by global warming. Caribbean's Elkhorn coral and leatherback turtles are on the
top ten hot list of endangered species. The coalition says mass bleaching
events have become more frequent and severe as ocean temperatures have risen.

UVI Student Government
Association Vice President St. Clair Hodge received credentials as a Certified
Student Leader in Washington, at the National Conference on Student Leadership.
He is a UVI junior, pursuing degrees in Business Administration and Computer
Information Systems. And he had to pass
a test of leadership skills. Hodge was one
of 169 U.S. college and university students who passed a certification exam. UVI Student Government Association Vice
