Wind Mills may start soon

Tutu Park Mall Windmills could start spinning – now that WAPA and Island Wind Power have come to an agreement.  They came to the Public Services Commission last night with a signed agreement for the interconnection that clears the  way for the wind turbines to start turning wind into electricity. They still have to have an engineer’s come to certify the turbines and that may take a week or more, but the beginning of big time wind power is about to dawn on St. Thomas.

 

Governor John DeJongh is still in Washington DC – he has his work cut out for him. Shuttling with the delegate from one Congressional office to another trying to convince the Washington DC lawmakers that the Diageo deal and Cruzan Rum deals are the right way to use the Rum Cover over tax rebates.  There are several efforts on Capitol hill to change the rum rebate and the Governor is working to convince them that they can’t change the rules after they have been used to stimulate our economic development.  The Puerto Rico delegation is trying to convince Congress that the Virgin Islands lured Diageo away from Puerto Rico

There is a nationwide recall of the H1N1 swine flu vaccine – some of the vaccine is too weak to be effective. However the recall does not affect the batch of vaccine that is in use in the Virgin Islands. None of the weak vaccine here. The Health department is continuing its vaccination program. Today St. Thomas:  at Ivanna Eudora Kean School. On St. Croix today at Central High School  and Friday at Education Complex.   

How much will renovations at Cyril E. King Airport Cost.. 20 million dollars.  The Port Authority Board of Directors heard that the cost of all construction materials has rocketed up in recent years and what was once a small project is now looking like a huge project.  They want to revamp the baggage handling area for outbound flights, rehab the Air conditioning and change the building’s footprint – all comes to 20 million.  Meanwhile the Board heard that American Airlines is behind on rent, so is WAPA and DPNR, Wesk Marine and Four Star Air Cargo.  All behind on the rent. Big Thank You to Barbara Donastorg retiring after 17 years working for the Port Authority .

Good News from Saints Peter and Paul School – they school is now fully accredited Middle States Association for Colleges and Schools issued a full accreditation now through December of 2014. Dr Gwen-Marie Moolenaar thanked the faculty and staff for all the hard work to earn accreditation.

The Governor’s Christmas  parties continue - today on St. Thomas at Marcelli, Abraham, Tuitt; Lockhart and Muller schools  And Friday  on St. Thomas at Oliver, Gomez, Sibilly and Bowsky.

WAPA Board of Directors is meeting at today on St. Croix – with maintenance contracts and insurance on the agenda

Virgin Islands Taxi Cab Commission is offering two taxi medallions µ- today On St. John on at 11:00 AM at the Boulon Center. On St. Croix on December 18 at 11:00 AM at the Offices in Golden Rock St. Croix. Only open to Virgin Islands Veterans and bid applications must be presented at the time of the auction. 

The E. Benjamin Oliver School Band Boosters Community birthday calendar is ready to go.  Calendar sales are scheduled for December 28,29 and 30 with only 1000 copies of the birthday calendar available $5 each.  Look for the birthday calendar at branches of FirstBank Next week Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday .

CAHS Music department has their Christmas concert tonight at 7:00 PM at Ruth E. Thomas Auditorium The Concert Choir, Steel Band, Concert Band and Symphonic Band will all perform.  The Tickets are on sale for $ 12 and 6 for children.

 

VITEMA is asking government agencies and not-for-profit organizations to apply for hazard mitigation funds.  There is 1.2 million available to retrofit buildings to survive high winds and minor flood control projects. There are meetings to learn about the funds.  µ TODAY at VITEMA on St. John.  No meeting yet on St. Thomas.

Commissioner of Police Novelle Francis is reminding parents of the curfew for children under the age of 16- they should be off the streets at 10PM unless accompanied by an adult legally responsible for their behavior. Violations of the curfew law will be required to perform community service. And no one under age 16 is allowed in a business that serves alcohol.

News from the Post Office – Christmas Eve Post Office will be open from 7:30 AM to Noon. And at Havensight open from 9:00 AM to noon.  On Saturday December 26, the Post offices will be open from 7:30 AM to noon and at Havensight they open at 9:00 AM to noon.   On New year’s eve, the Post offices

Miracle on Main Street is Friday - a party that runs all day on Main Street in Charlotte Amalie featuring dancing in the streets, music, and open shops.  In Emancipation Garden there is the Kean School Jazz and Steel pan bands from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM, Top Notch Band from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, , Cool Sessions from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM and traditional Arts and crafts and food all day. 

On Main street the Ulla Muller school Steel orchestra will perform in Post Office Square from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. All Stars will perform at Cardow and the Sibilly School orchestra will perform at Nye Gade, Milo’s Kings will perform at Raadets Gade, Caribbean Ritual dancers are in front of Coconuts BCB Burning Blazers are in Palm Passage.  Lockhart quadrille dancers will be roaming the street and Encore band is at Store Tver Gade.

 Along the waterfront the Antilles Steel band is at Palm Passage Parking Lot from 5 to 7 followed by Ah We Band. Sweeta band is in front of Rolex. 

The parade of Lighted boats will begin at 6:30 PM and a mini-parade from Market Square with Sebastian Majorettes, CAHS Marching band, Charming Twirlers, Santa on a Float, Virgin Islands Performing Arts, a Cultural Christmas Float, Mungo Niles Cultural Dancers, Coc and the Sunshine Band, Virgin Islands Heritage Dancers, Kean School Float, Santa’s Living room Float and Glen Kwebna Davis with Old Time Christmas Caroling. All Friday evening in downtown Charlotte Amalie.

Good News Maker of the Day is a  math teacher at Ulla Muller school.  Adam Kloper has been teaching math at Ulla Muller school for many years and teaching chess on the side as a way to stimulate the student’s thinking.  More than 30 students are part of the student chess club in third through 6th grade. Now here comes the Anderson Family Grant to buy a giant chess set for the school. With chess men that are two feet tall. The unveiling is set for Monday at 9:30 AM at Ulla Muller school.  That’s Adam Kloper –making good news.
