HOVENSA gives 4 year scholarships to 10 Graduates

Delegate Donna Christiansen urged republicans in the US senate to stop blocking important legislation that would extend unemployment benefits for jobless Americans and benefit the Virgin Islands. According to Christiansen, the jobs bill is legislation that would extend the Virgin Islands rum cover-over from $10.50 dollars to $13.25. The bill covers everything from extending unemployment, to funding summer jobs, and tax cuts for small businesses and infrastructure improvement.

The committee on Appropriations met yesterday where it took testimonies from the offices of the Adjutant General, Virgin Islands National Guard ,and the VI bureau of motor vehicles- regarding their fiscal year 2011 opening budget allotments. Major General Renaldo Rivera told committee members in his testimony that he is requesting an appropriation of approximately $1.45 million dollars as the territories share of operating in the Virgin Islands National Guard. He pointed out that the Adjutant General and the Virgin Islands National Guard are two separate and distinct entities which function as an integrated organization. Both the territorial and federal government providing the predominant share of the resources.

HOVENSA has awarded scholarships to 10 recent graduates of Virgin Islands high schools to assist them in their pursuit of a degree at an accredited U.S. college or University of their choice. The recipients of the grants are Nicholas Cromwell, Ashlee Douglas, Akeema Edwards, Lynisha Farrel, Nicholas Henry, Nicole Henry, Asha Joseph, Tyler Rice, Malcolm Stephens, and Daniel Turbay. The recipients were selected based on their scholastic record and financial needs compared to other applicants. The scholarships to these students will continue for 4 years provided the students maintain good academic standing at their chosen institution of higher learning.

Governor John DeJongh has a news conference today at 2:00 PM to discuss the comprehensive plan the government has developed to address concerns and issues at Coki Point on St. Thomas.

St. Criox- Fishermen are invited to provide feedback on the final design for renovations to La Reine Fish Market on St Croix. In advance of the project being prepared for public bidding, a meeting has been  scheduled for today  at 6:00 PM at the Alfredo Andrews Elementary school auditorium.

The Virgin Islands Territorial Emergency Management Agency is holding its first ever tsunami Workshop this month to educate residents and businesses about the threat and risks of tsunamis in the Virgin Islands and how to become a tsunami ready community.
