Donastorg joins race for governor

 Governor John DeJongh recently hosted a meeting with taxi drivers on St Croix to allow an opportunity to air their concerns and to have their questions answered by the government officials whose agencies interact and regulate the ground transportation industry. Government officials represented the Dept. of Tourism, Bureau of Motor Vehicles, Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Economic Development Authority, and Taxicab commission. The Governor noted that he brought the various government representatives to the meeting to provide the opportunity for an open and frank discussion of the concerns of the taxi drivers, and to allow for their questions to be answered., noting that many of the taxi drivers were appreciative of the opportunity provided for them by the return of regular cruise ships calls to St Croix.” They have hailed to the return of cruise ships as an opportunity for them and they look forward to the continued expansion of the cruise ship visits to the island.

Senator Adlah “Foncie” Donastorg’s campaign for Governor kicked into high gear Sunday night with the formal announcement of his candidacy on St. Croix and the introduction of his running mate, Samuel Baptiste. Donastorg thanked Crucians for their overwhelming show of support and highlighted the skills of his running mate. Baptiste, who is 46 years old, was employed for ten years with HOVENSA before resigning his position last week to officially join the Donastorg ticket. 

A walk for peace and against crime that was previously scheduled for Tuesday but had to be postpone due to inclement weather is set for this evening. The event has been renamed The Woman s March for Peace and Against violence. It is meant to portray the strong message we want no more violence, crime, and guns. Participants are asked to wear white and bring flashlights. Everyone will gather at the parking lot of Renaissance hotel behind the pineapple beach at 6:00 PM. The group will then proceed in a silent march to Coki point.

Consistency paid off for Gray Ingram’s Big OH, which won Best Boat in the 47th Annual July Open Billfish Tournament. The competition finished yesterday. The team aboard the Ricky Scarborough 63 released one blue marlin the first day, two the second and three the third for a total of six blue marlin, more than any other team in the 23-boat fleet.“ All releases on the boat were made by Bacardi, who won the event’s only angler prize. There will be an awards ceremony  this evening at the Virgin Islands game Fishing Club.

The retired fire fighters association and Jr. Firefighters have a meeting to discuss preparations for their 30th year anniversary July 30th in the Borne Field fire station at 6:00 PM.

The Virgin Islands National Alliance on Mental Illness has a meeting Wednesday August 4 at 6:00 PM in the Schneider Regional Hospital. For more information call

Senator Berry’s funeral services will be held on July 31rst in the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral at 10:00 AM following a musical prelude from 9:00 AM.

Simpson Building, #23A Hospital Street in Frederiksted, St. Croix.
